The Physics Behind Hand Trolleys
Date Posted:5 October 2016
We give our friends nicknames because we trust and rely on them and it’s no different for our industrial equipment. The equipment we rely on always gets a nickname, which is why hand trolleys are called two wheelers, stack trucks, trolley trundlers, sack barrows, dollies and bag barrows.
L-shaped hand trolleys make heavy and bulky items easier to move, preventing back injuries, saving time, and making your work run smoothly. They are versatile, durable and fast, meaning they are relied on by hundreds of thousands of hard working Australians.
Today we’re going to take a step back from the trolley to see how it works, examining the mechanisms behind the magic.
The Mechanisms behind the Magic
The process behind how hand trolleys lift heavy and bulky items may seem simple, but there is more going on that meets the eye. In essence, trollies rely on two scientific principles to move heavy loads:
1. The principle of levers (to multiply forces); and
2. The law of conservation of momentum
These principles mean that you can exert a small physical force from your body. When applied through the hand trolley, this force will become exponentially larger. That force then moves the heavy and bulky items around your warehouse. Simple!
Levers and Momentum Working Together
The principle of levers allows you to lift an item off the ground, and the law of conservation of momentum allows you to easily wheel the load to somewhere else. Our hand trolleys are carefully designed with a handle at the top which is bent relative to the main axis of the machine. This allows you to comfortably apply a force in the horizontal direction without unbalancing the load. This is essential to ensure the safety of your workers and it greatly increases efficiency too.
