The use of either an Expanding Conveyor or a Fixed Roller Conveyor is an excellent way to move product quickly and efficiently from point A to B.

While the two conveyors have many similarities, there are some key differences;

  • Fixed Roller Conveyor:
  • Static Design: Fixed conveyors have a stationary design where their length, width, and configuration remain constant.
  • Limited Flexibility: These conveyors typically have limited flexibility in terms of length adjustment. Once installed, their length can't be easily changed without significant modifications.
  • Suitable for Specific Applications: Fixed conveyors are suitable for applications where the material flow path is consistent, and there are no significant changes in the layout of the facility.
  • Lower Maintenance: Since they have a simpler design with fewer moving parts, fixed conveyors usually require lower maintenance compared to expanding conveyors.

  • Expanding Conveyors:
  • Adjustable Length: Expanding conveyors, also known as telescopic conveyors or expandable conveyors, are designed to extend or retract to adjust the overall length of the conveyor.
  • Flexible Configuration: These conveyors offer greater flexibility in adapting to changing material flow requirements or varying layouts within a facility. They can be extended or retracted as needed to reach different areas. Tight bends can also be formed to move stock around corners etc. Cartons simply follow the twist and turns of the conveyor path without the need for side rails or engineered curves.
  • Versatility: Expanding conveyors are versatile and suitable for applications where the material flow path may change frequently or where loading/unloading points vary.
  • Maintenance: Due to their more complex design and additional moving parts, expanding conveyors generally require more maintenance compared to fixed conveyors, that been said if the conveyor is maintained and used correctly it will match the fixed conveyors for longevity.

By implementing either one of MHA’s above types of conveyors, you can be sure to be improving the efficiency in your warehouse while significantly decreasing the risk of injury. You will create a safer and efficient environment while minimizing the physical strain on workers, as they perform their day to day tasks.
